{"id":32,"date":"2021-06-09T02:01:20","date_gmt":"2021-06-09T02:01:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/statepi.jhsph.edu\/star\/?page_id=32"},"modified":"2026-06-03T12:36:51","modified_gmt":"2026-06-03T16:36:51","slug":"about-star","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/statepi.jhsph.edu\/star\/about-star\/","title":{"rendered":"About STAR"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>STAR<\/h2>\n<p>The Study of Treatment and Reproductive\u00a0<span data-contrast=\"auto\">Outcomes (STAR) was established in 2019. The cohort\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">sought to\u00a0answer questions related to the effects of HIV infection and HIV-related medical conditions on women of reproductive age. It buil<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">t on the work of the Women\u2019s Interagency HIV Study (WIHS), which was developed in 1993 and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">was one of the largest federally funded longitudinal cohort studies of HIV among US women. In 2019, the WIHS merged with the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study (MACS),\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a cohort of gay and bisexual men<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> started in 1984, to form the MACS\/WIHS Combined Cohort Study (MWCCS). Utilizing the backbone of the MWCCS, STAR\u00a0was developed to obtain information on reproductive-aged women living with HIV and those at risk for HIV infection, focusing on the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">southeastern United States.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">STAR study sites in Atlanta GA, Birmingham AL, Jackson MS, Chapel Hill NC, Miami FL, and Washington DC recruited and retained more than 1,000 reproductive-aged women living with and without HIV.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The cohort recently received funding to continue this important work. This next phase of the study (2026-2032) will be known as STAR 2.0. STAR 2.0 will recruit and retain 1,100 reproductive-aged women living with and without HIV from the same study sites as STAR 1.0. In addition to these women, approximately 300 of their newborn infants will be followed to evaluate infant outcomes via chart abstraction.<\/p>\n<p>STAR study visits will rigorously collect sociodemographic, behavioral, clinical, and outcome data as well as biospecimens (<span data-contrast=\"auto\">i.g. serum, plasma, cells, urine,\u00a0cervical<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> swabs, hair<u>,<\/u><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and oral<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> swabs) to promote\u00a0multidisciplinary HIV\/AIDS research. The cohort\u2019s research efforts\u00a0seek\u00a0to respond to the distinctive health needs of reproductive-aged women living with HIV. The STAR cohort has the\u00a0potential to\u00a0ultimately improve\u00a0the health of young women living with HIV,\u00a0optimize\u00a0the gains of HIV treatments, and contribute to ending the HIV epidemic in the United States.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>STAR The Study of Treatment and Reproductive\u00a0Outcomes (STAR) was established in 2019.
